Your skin needs to be warm for this examination.

There may be information they need to know, especially if they are taking care of you during/following this examination. Share the information it contains with your family (if you wish) so that they can be of help and support. If you are concerned about any changes please contact your GP. The needle may cause a small amount of bleeding, and there is a small chance of localised bruising and the muscles tested may feel sore for a short time after the examination. They are not harmful and do not persist once the examination is over. The sensations have been described as similar to a TENS machine (a TENS machine is a device used to help relieve pain which applies small electrical impulses to parts of the body which are felt as a tingling sensation). Sometimes people may find the examination uncomfortable. This will fade quickly and is not uncomfortable. Preparation of the skin prior to the examination may cause a temporary reddening of the skin. You may need either EMG or NCS or sometimes both. There are many conditions that can cause these problems. Your doctor has requested an EMG and NCS to be performed because you have reported some symptoms that raise the possibility of a problem affecting your nerves or muscles. This is done by recording the electrical activity they produce either at rest, when moving or when being stimulated by a small electrical current. What are EMG and NCS?ĮMG and NCS are an examination of your muscles and peripheral nerves. If after reading it you have any concerns or require further explanation, please discuss this with a member of the healthcare team caring for you. It is not intended to replace the discussion between you and your doctor, but may act as a starting point for discussion. Most of your questions should be answered by this leaflet. This leaflet has been produced to give you general information about your procedure. Need some help choosing a language? Please refer to Browsealoud Supported Voices and Languages.
